Chemex: The Meeting of Elegance and Flavor

Chemex is one of the most elegant ways to brew coffee. Chosen by The New York Times as one of the best designs of modern times, this stunning design is part of the permanent collections at prestigious museums like MoMA and The Smithsonian. As both a striking piece of art and an exceptional brewing tool, Chemex is a timeless classic.

Boil Your Water.

Bring the water to a boil, then let it cool to about 94°C.

Tip: If you don’t have a temperature-controlled kettle or a thermometer, simply let the boiling water sit for 1-2 minutes before using.

Grind Your Coffee.

Grind 30 grams of coffee to a coarse, sand-like consistency.

Tip: If you’re using a hand grinder, set it to a medium-coarse setting.

Place Your Filter.

Place the filter into the Chemex and thoroughly rinse it with hot water to ensure it sticks without any air gaps. This step also removes any paper taste from affecting your coffee.

Prepare the Chemex.

Place the Chemex on the scale and reset it to zero. Pour out the water from the Chemex, add the ground coffee to the center of the filter, and reset the scale again.

Blooming and Water Addition

Start your timer and slowly add 60-75 ml of water to initiate the blooming process. To observe the coffee’s initial gas release and enhance its aroma, you can gently stir with a spoon.

After the 45-second bloom, continue pouring water slowly in a circular motion until you reach a total of 500 ml. Be gentle while adding the water, aiming to reach 500 ml by around 1:15 minutes.

Brewing Time

To ensure your coffee grind is the correct size, aim for all the water to have filtered through by around 4:30 minutes. Once the brewing is complete, carefully remove the filter by holding it from the edges and dispose of it.

Gently swirl your Chemex to balance the flavors of your coffee.

Your coffee is now ready! Enjoy sipping and savoring the elegance of this brewing method.
